In Kuwait, gardens come alive at night more than by day. The right lighting decides whether your yard becomes a comfortable evening space or just a dark area. Here are ideas we use in our projects.
Think in layers
- Ambient light: a comfortable glow for the whole space, like lights in the pergola roof.
- Path lighting: for safety and movement, like low bollards along a walkway.
- Accent lighting: highlights features such as a green wall, a palm tree or a planter.
Choose the light colour carefully
Warm white is the most popular choice for gardens because it brings out wood and plants and feels calm. Cool white works for functional lighting but can make a lounge feel formal.
Your walls are your biggest canvas
Up-and-down wall lights on a wood or green wall add rhythm to the yard and make the space feel larger at night.
Hidden lighting under seating
An LED strip hidden under decking or built-in seating makes the lounge look like it floats, and it's one of the details guests notice most.
Mistakes to avoid
- Bright lights aimed into people's eyes.
- Random placement with no plan, leaving some spots glaring and others dark.
- Fixtures not made for outdoor use that suffer from dust and water.
- Leaving lighting until after construction, then having to break surfaces or run visible cables.
